Port Dalhousie‘s Lincoln Fabrics building has been empty for the past few years. Bricked-up windows kept the contents hidden from the community outside. This has created some mystery around the interior of this historic building.

However, CallKarl.ca recently sponsored a pop-up dining event at the Lincoln Fabrics building to support St. Catharines’ Community Care. This event, held on 11th May 2018, flung open the doors to 200 guests. Many people were excited to get inside and the dinner sold out in just a few days.

So, to give everyone who didn’t snag a ticket a sneak peek of the interior of the building, we took a walk through with local photographer Daniel Cruz. Plus, you can take a 3D tour at the bottom of this post!

Built by the Maple Leaf Rubber Company in 1900, the Lincoln Fabrics building will eventually be converted to condos. Like me, I am sure many people are eager to discover the unique interior elements that might be featured in the final design.

Warehouse conversions, like the one planned for the Lincoln Fabrics building, have swept the globe in recent years. This trend in urban architecture is for good reason. Rather than living in a cookie-cutter apartment, people enjoy features like exposed brick, high ceilings, steel columns, and wood floors. Plus, warehouses are often found in close proximity to a harbour – offering sweeping views of the water.

Lincoln Fabrics is no exception. Wandering through the expansive warehouse, light pours in through large windows overlooking Port Dalhousie’s Martindale Pond. A grand, but unloved, wooden staircase joins the five floors of the building.

For the community and the architect undertaking a project like this one, a warehouse conversion keeps the history of the building alive, honors the space, and elevates the landscape of the neighborhood.

While there is a massive makeover ahead for the Lincoln Fabrics building, the possibilities are exciting. Imagine the lifestyle living in picturesque Port Dalhousie, right on the water, somewhere truly unique that also recognizes the history of the Niagara Region.
