With the depths of winter upon us, I can’t think of better timing for the name Sunset Beach pop UP on my news feed! Ahh…how easy is it to daydream about the warmer months, when Frisbees, sandcastles, skimboards and bikinis are the backdrop to an endless summer? Sunset Beach, for those who may not be familiar, is in the North End St. Catharines, where the most perfect sunsets you can imagine take place on a nightly basis here in our own backyard. And in the summer of 2015, my family and I set out to watch as many of them as we could and capture those special moments together while posting our experiences on social media. Word got out and the community noticed. Together, we convinced the City of St. Catharines to rename Municipal Beach (Boring!) to Sunset Beach (Beauty!).

During our first full summer of the newly named Sunset Beach, it was so great to see people young and old taking advantage of this beautiful beach. I couldn’t help thinking, “We have to continue to make this beach better.”

And it appears the city wants to continue to raise the beach’s profile!

The Future of Sunset Beach

The City of St. Catharines has received a proposal to develop 12 beach volleyball courts at Sunset Beach. As part of the decision making process a Public Information Meeting has been scheduled for 7 pm on Wednesday February 8, 2017 at Port Weller Community Centre to allow residents to review and discuss the proposal.

I encourage those of you who are looking to improve Sunset Beach to attend and discuss the beach, address your concerns and commend the city on their good efforts.

What’s Next?

Well you know me, I’ve started brainstorming, as I so often do, making a list of what else would make Sunset Beach an even better. I’ll admit, my wishlist got a little long, but I really put hard and heavy thought into what was easy to facilitate, what was inexpensive to put into place, and what investments were essential in making Sunset Beach a continuing success and a thriving community hotspot for all.

With every issue there is also opportunity.

Instead of giving you a list of what I think we need, I’ve put together a presentation of my vision of what Sunset Beach, and the Port Weller community, deserves. Have a look and please, let me know what you think! I’d love to know what you want to see at #SunsetBeachSTC!
